I bake with kids.
They learn stuff along the way.
That’s the headline.
The longer version is that I spent over 18 years as a consultant in New York, most recently as a Managing Director. I’ve sat in a lot of rooms watching very smart adults struggle with focus, planning, follow-through and emotional regulation.
I’ve also been a South Street Seaport local for the last 18 years, ever since I moved to New York from Australia in 2008. This neighborhood is where I’ve built my life - and now, the things I care most about.
And honestly?
Seeing how much executive function is missing in the younger generation entering the workforce terrifies me.
I don’t want to wait until my Little One is 25 years old to fix that.
What that looks like
I host hands-on baking experiences for kids and families around downtown Manhattan - cookie decorating, pop-ups, and neighborhood traditions that have somehow become a thing.
I’m not interested in perfect bakes or picture-perfect kids. I care about the process. The mess. The learning that sneaks in.
Why baking?
Because baking does a lot of quiet work.
—
It asks kids to slow down.
To plan.
To adapt when things go wrong.
To finish
—
Baking solved a lot for me. It’s how i’m trying to fix a few things for the next generation.
Your Questions, Answered
-
Nope. I’m a home baker.
I bake in real kitchens, with real kids, and very real messes.
-
Yes - but don’t tell the kids.
The learning sneaks in while they’re measuring, waiting, adjusting, and finishing what they start.
-
Absolutely not.
Curiosity helps. Everything else can be learned (or frosted over).
-
Generally kids ages 4-10, but I care more about attention span than age.
Some 4 year olds crush it. Some 10 year olds… need a moment.
-
So here’s the thing.
Helping is allowed. Hovering is optional. Parents sometimes step in and course correct. That’s totally fine if that’s what you prefer. But I’ll probably encourage you to let your kid make the mess - and not get it right, right away.
-
Definitely not.
Perfect is boring. The process is the point. I promise everything still tastes delicious.
-
Because baking naturally teaches patience, planning and follow-through. And at the end, there’s usually something good to eat.
-
Yes. Intentionally.
Nothing catastrophic, but perfection is not part of the plan. I promise I have great tips to manage your anxiety over the mess and make your life easier.
-
I’ve watched it work - with my own child, parents on playdates and myself.
-
This is where I live, bake and build things.
Community feels different when it’s local.
-
Nope.
Curiosity is enough.
-
I spent over 20 years as a consultant, most recently as a Managing Director.
The same frameworks used to help adults think, plan, and execute work surprisingly well for kids - especially when frosting is involved.
-
Because I’ve seen what happens when we wait too long. It’s a lot harder to learn focus, planning, and follow-through at 25 than it is at 5.
-
Fries.
I will never say no to fries.
-
Paw Paw Cream.
I’m Australian. Aussies know what I’m talking about.
-
Meringues. Because I LOVE to lick the bowl and sneak a few spoonfuls of the meringue before it’s baked.
-
I’m Australian!
I moved to New York when I was 25 - 17 years ago (yes… I’m okay with you doing the math!)
My accent is still Aussie… I think!
